A Brief History of AMP Connectors
AMP was founded during World War II in 1941 as the Aircraft and Marine Products (AMP) company. Their initial product was solderless electrical connections designed for the rapid and replaceable wire connections used in aircraft and ships.
During the post-war industrial expansion, AMP adapted to the new economy and, in 1956, changed its name to AMP Incorporated. In 1999 AMP was acquired by Tyco International. In July of 2007, Tyco International divided into three independent companies; Tyco Electronics Ltd, Covidien Ltd (formerly Tyco Healthcare), and Tyco International Ltd (formerly Tyco Fire & Security and Tyco Engineered Products & Services (TFS/TEPS)).
On March 10th, 2011, Tyco Electronics Ltd formally changed its name to TE Connectivity Ltd to more accurately reflect its dominant position as a creator of sensor and connectivity components.
The Three Main Market Segments Served By AMP
AMP Connectors supplies core functional electronic components to a broad spectrum of home appliances. These components include essential products for home air-conditioners, washing machines, clothes dryers, refrigerators, water heaters, microwave ovens, dishwashers, and many cooking appliances.
This market segment includes the four main areas of automotive, sensor solutions, commercial transportation, applications tooling, and industrial transportation.
The international automotive industry widely uses AMP Connector products for infotainment applications, body and chassis systems, convenience devices and technology, driver information, device miniaturization, safety and security features, and motor and powertrain applications.
Another area served by AMP Connector technology is hybrid and electronic mobility solutions, including such applications as in-vehicle technology, storage and battery solutions, and charging innovations. Additionally, AMP’s products are widely used for on- and off-highway transportation, including agricultural, construction, buses, and other vehicles.
AMP Connectors also provides leading-edge expertise in the sensor technology used by corporate clients in a wide range of industries, including industrial equipment, robotics, commercial transportation and logistics, automotive solutions, medical devices, defense and aerospace, and a wide range of consumer electronics applications.
AMP supplies a range of products and components to serve clients in the fields of heavy industry and manufacturing. These solutions primarily focus on areas that distribute power, signals, and data.
AMP products are widely used in industrial process control systems and areas of manufacturing automation, including industrial controls, human-machine interface, robotics, power distribution, and industrial communication.
Connectivity solutions make many intelligent building products possible and are used to facilitate lighting connections, elevators, security features, escalators, and HVAC.
High-speed trains are another high-tech area with low fault-tolerance and high-reliability requirements where AMP products are used to guarantee a high level of safety and functionality. This includes high safety requirements for high-speed trains, light rail vehicles, metros, and signaling switching equipment.
Other areas AMP products serve include the lighting and solar power industries, medical imaging, surgical applications, minimally invasive surgical intervention applications, therapeutic and diagnostic equipment.
In aerospace and defense, AMP provides ruggedized electronic interconnects for marine, space, air, and ground transportation.
