About TE Connectivity – Agastat Relays
Agastat Relays by TE Connectivity are an industry-standard electronic component product designed by TE Connectivity, an American high-tech company headquartered in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
Designed for accuracy and durability under conditions of high industrial stress, their Time Delay Relay components are unmatched for reliability under extreme pneumatic, industrial operating conditions.
As of 2020, TE Connectivity has a total workforce of over 80,000 and annual revenue of over $12 billion. They are a publicly-traded company listed on the NYSE and the S&P 500.
Founded in 2007, their corporate headquarters are in Schaffhausen, Switzerland. Their executive headquarters are in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, USA.
In addition to Agastat relays, their main products are a variety of electronic components, connector systems, sensors, and networking electronics.
Their high-tech product lines provide essential components to various industries, including aerospace, medical equipment, oil and gas, defense, automotive parts, industrial electronics, communication systems, energy, and end-user consumer electronics.
The origin of their technical expertise traces back to 1941 with the founding of the Aircraft and Marine Products (AMP) company. AMP was created to fill wartime needs in the aerospace, marine, and defense markets for solderless electrical connections to rapidly remove the wire connections commonly used in ships and aircraft during World War II.
With changes in the post-war economy, the company rebranded in 1956 to AMP Incorporated. In 1999 they were acquired by Tyco International. In 2007 this company was divided into three separate companies. Tyco Electronics Ltd became the producer of the high-quality, research-intensive electronic products that we know today.
In 2011 the decision was made to change the name to TE Connectivity Ltd to reflect more clearly the company’s role as a leading manufacturer of sensor and connectivity components.
Global Reach
TE Connectivity’s global workforce of over 80,000 includes over 7500 engineers, allowing them to provide world-class electronic high-tech devices and components to clients in more than 140 countries worldwide.
What is an Agastat Component?
Agastat refers to a product line of industrial-strength relays, including heavy-duty electronic timing, protective, control, and electromechanical relays, all built to withstand the most challenging conditions of modern heavy industry.
They range from multi-mode, microprocessor-based timers to pulse-counting timers and result from intense and evolving research and development over more than half a century in a highly specialized and challenging field of industrial manufacturing.
The AGASTAT 7000 series, for example, is a high-precision timing device that balances mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic forces with a functional minimum of moving parts.
Component voltages range from 6 to 550 VAC/VDC. Device timing ranges from 0.1 seconds to 1 minute.
Agastat relays are manufactured in both on and off delay models as both nuclear and commercial qualified.
Relays are rated up to 10 amps switching and are available in both 2 1/2 and 4-inch diameters. They include a latching option and are manufactured with a range of 4 to 24 poles.
The product line covers a broad range of general-purpose magnetic latching control and time delay relays and is available in both commercial and industrial grades.
What does a Time Delay Relay Do?
The purpose of a time delay relay is to manage a time-sensitive event. A time delay relay is a control relay with an in-built time-delay mechanism. In a standard control relay, the output contacts open and close with the application of a specific voltage. By contrast, the contacts on a time delay relay will open and close before or after a defined time delay.
The mechanism is typically governed by either the application of an input voltage, as in the case of a standard relay, or with the opening/closing of a trigger signal. The trigger signal may be either a voltage, a ‘power trigger,’ or a dry contact control switch, such as a float or limit switch, a push-button, or some other mechanism.
How Does an Agastat Time Delay Relay Work?
Each Agastat timer contains a filter, a diaphragm solenoid coil, a solenoid coil, a timing disk, and an operating spring. When a current passes through the timer, the solenoid core moves into the coil, applying pressure onto the diaphragm. Applying this pressure causes the diaphragm to move upwards, trapping air into the upper part of the chamber.
This compressed air is then expelled via the needle valve timing disc with a specific time delay. The amount of uncertainty is determined by adjusting the valve. To avoid a dangerous or undesired chemical reaction, an inert gas may be used in place of air. This is particularly important in many complex industrial processes.
